You register the domain name with a registrar, then call any isp that offers hosting. Buy a package for less than $20 per month and consider how many GB of bandwidth will be transferred per month. How many pages, visitors, kB per page etc….

The hosting company will transfer the domain name and assign it an IP address which can be used as an alternative to the canonical domain name that you selected if you wish… They will allow you to upload your HTML etc. type pages onto one of their servers which is just a regular old computer running special software called ’server software’ many websites with different domains can be hosted on the same server making it profitable for them to set up several such machines.

If you choose Yahoo, then you will be paying about $20 per month and will need to learn how to use some FTP client to upload the pages that you design or have contracted to some other third party designer to design for you. You will need a programmer, or a graphics artist at a minumum, although there are probably some sites on the Internet where you can use incredibly easy software to design a website by pointing and clicking and typing text. Yahoo probably has all this worked out, so don’t worry.

Just get a simple site designed. Read directions and be aware that the vast majority of all websites will not make money unless used as a resource to extend service to a bricks and mortar business that wishes to increase it’s exposure using the Internet.

Amazon.com and the like are the one in a thousand case…

    Good Luck.

Are you buying just a domain or hosting & a domain?

In order to have an Internet website you have to pay company to host your website out on the Internet(unless you knowledgable on how to setup you own www server but I doubt it). Most of the time you can find a good webhost that will host your website & provide you with a free domain name. A domain a http://www.yourname.com that points to your webhost. To my knowledge yahoo.com provides both hosting and domain name service so it all depends which package you signed up for.

If you plan on building a website, you need to find a company that can host your domain. Yahoo! can do that as well as many other companies.

There are free webhosting services, but I don’t know of any that will allow you to use your own domain. The costs vary based on the features you need. If you’re just starting out and don’t have a lot of content or need a lot of features you can probably go with a shared hosting provider. This means you don’t have a dedicated server.

Many webhosting companies have forums with dedicated areas for “pre-sales” questions. It’s best to take a look at these forums as you can get a sense of how responsive the company is to your needs.

Some webhosts also have prebuilt templates you can use for building your site. Or, they may offer services like Fantastico that offer easy installation of other packages such as content management systems or blogging software.

Yahoo lists their hosting at $2.95 per month, and up…

The ‘up’ is that if your ‘friends’ or viewers start to pile on, and all view your webpage, that creates a high band usage, tha might exceed your paid bandwidth, so, you could get charged LOTS more!

You can host it anywhere you want, including a small computer at home, if you run Linux on it, as a server. Cost is ZERO for http://knopper.net/knoppix or one of the 310 distros at http://livecdlist.com

It depends on what you want to use it for. If you just want to set up a personal web site, then Yahoo GeoCities would be a good bet. Some Yahoo accounts allow a limited amount of free space on GeoCities and provide the basic tools to build the site.

If you want to build something more substantial, I would not recommend GeoCities based on my own past experience. Yahoo/GeoCities domain names can be very difficult to near impossible to transfer to another host should you decide to do so. Alternatively, I would recommend that you register your domain through a company like GoDaddy.com or InexpensiveDomains.com. There are many others.

Then, contact a web hosting company on the net such as DreamHosting or HOSTONY. There are many to choice from and offer a diversity of additional services that you will not get through GeoCities. Do some comparison shopping and get what you need with some space to grow.

Finally, you will need a HTML editing software to actually build the web site. There are many available on the net with varying levels of dificulty to learn. Prices range from free to outrageous. If you use Windows, Microsoft Front Page at about $90 is relatively simple to learn and, but has a tendency to inflate the resulting code. It is a “WYSIWYG” (What You See Is What You Get) format program. There are many others such as Amaya, Arachnophilia, CoffeeCup, DreamWeaver, Nvu, Netscape Composer, and the list goes on. For Linux o/s users, there are also choices.

Again, it all boils done to what you want to do with a website.
