What’s the difference between a site offering a web domain and web hosting?

=) Let me know if I need to be clearer.

  1. N-D says:

    First it’s clear enough.
Web domain = To be simple its just getting a web name.
    Ex. http://www.ineedawebsite.com
Web hosting = They offer you storage in one of their servers so you can upload HTML files and make a web site there.

    Think of it this way:

Domain = shortcut directions to your website

Hosting = your actual address on the website

You can have hosting without a domain, or domain without hosting. The two can be separate. However, here’s what’ll happen…

Domain without hosting: people can get to your place easily, and found an empty lot there (maybe with a sign that says “coming soon”)

Hosting without domain: people can get to your place by entering IP address directly, but it’s rather hard to get to, to put it plainly.

You can have hosting without any content, in other words, you can buy hosting and not put anything on it besides a “welcome page”. It’d be equivalent of an empty lot with a sign that says “welcome”, and nothing else.

    Got all that?

All generalizations are false, including this one.

In brick and mortar terms you are roughly asking:
What’s the difference between an agency offering a postal address and a home/apartment?
    So you figure it out.

For instance here: http://www.reliablewebhosting.guidearticles.com?id=m3y227 you get a free “web domain” when you buy a $3.50 a month “web hosting” package.
