Web hosting: how to create your own from your hard drive?

I figured that all the files on the internet must be kept on hard drives.

I was wondering how to create by own web space hosted on MY hard drive so that i only have to pay for my domain name, and have complete control over everything.

Can someone perhaps tell me if it is possible and what software i would require?

Thanks.

It takes way more than just a standard computer, and a standard broadband connection does not have enough bandwidth to host a website. You would need a T1 line and a very beefy computer. It will be cheaper to just use a host like godaddy.com.

You would need business-class Internet access. See what’s available from your provider.

DSL is all but useless, since the upload speed is typically very low.

You need web hosting software – Apache and Windows IIS being the two most popular. You will also need a web hosting internet account – your standard ISP account will not allow you to host.

There are too many disadvantages to list why you should not host your website at home. Most hosting services have a 10mb dedicated line at a minimum and they come with 24 hour support so if anything goes wrong they are there to fix it instantly.

I suggest you have a look at http://www.hosting24.com they will register a domain name for free and come with unlimited webspace and unlimited data transfer.

Also when you sign up with them if you enter in a discount code they will give you 25% off their ridiculously cheap hosting plans. code to use is 25OFF

I host all my sites there and have been more than pleased with their help and support, I hope this helps
