What’s in a name? A domain name, that is! You may ask, “What is the big deal about choosing the right domain name?” Choosing the right name can make it easier for people to find your business.
Below are 6 tips for choosing a winning domain name.
Tip #1 – Use your #1 keyword in your domain name. Don’t worry about making it keyword rich; just simply use you’re most important keyword. For instance, if you sell computers you might choose: buycomputerscheap.com, lowcostcomputers.com or greatcomputerdeals.com.
Tip #2 – Use .com! There are plenty of other extensions available such as .net, .org, .biz, .tv and even .cc. But nothing has caught on better than .com. No other dot variation is as popular. Remember, if you want a winning domain name, definitely choose .com!!
Tip #3 – Avoid commonly misspelled domain names such as cheapmorgage.com (should be cheapmortgage.com). If you must choose a domain name that is commonly misspelled then register the misspelled version as well. The price of a domain name is so inexpensive these days that it is well worth the investment.
Tip #4 – Avoid names with dashes as consumers often forget to use the dash and could be directed to your competitor. Similarly, you should register a variation of your domain name with dashes and park the name.
Tip #5 – When choosing a name, be sure the name does not include trademarked phrases.
Tip #6 – Register your domain name for as long as possible to avoid an expiration of the name. Most domain name registration companies or webhosting companies will have the capability of automatically renewing your domain name. Select this option if it is available. Otherwise pay for the domain name years in advance. For instance, if the domain name cost you $10 a year, paying for the name 10 years in advance will only cost you $100. Pretty cheap for peace of mind!
